The green energy sector received a boost with the ruling by the Supreme Court that the Government must take immediate action to reduce air pollution.

A unanimous ruling by the panel of five judges, led by the court’s president Lord Neuberger, demanded that “the Government must prepare and consult on new air quality plans for submission to the European Commission…no later than December 31, 2015”.

The Supreme Court made it clear that tackling air pollution had to be a major priority for whichever Government is in power after May 7th.

ClientEarth – a group of environmental lawyers – brought the case and it is undoubtedly a significant victory. The action was launched after the UK was found to be in breach of EU limits for nitrogen dioxide in the air.
