The company are a developer and provider of low-cost, non-lithium battery storage systems, with a focus on medium to long duration storage in the renewable energy market.
Their patented battery technology is based upon a proven and robust chemistry combined with materials engineering excellence from fuel cell technology, and their focused product development is enabling them to commercialise a unique offering based upon cost, performance, safety and sustainability.
The company has raised over £10M of funding to date through seed rounds and grants and are currently closing out a new funding round which will help them commercialise their technology – specifically exploiting a beachhead market in high temperature solar growth markets prohibitive to deployment of incumbent lithium-ion technology. The investment will provide the capital to grow the business and deliver product-intent systems to trial customers from a semi-automated pilot manufacturing facility. They are run by a leadership team comprising founders and talent drawn from energy sector and big four consulting firms.

Key Responsibilities:
Technical Strategy and Leadership:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive technical strategy aligned with the company's overall goals and objectives
- Provide strategic direction to the Research & Development team and lead the development of cutting-edge energy storage technologies.
- Champion a culture of innovation and excellence within the technical team
- Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive landscape to identify opportunities for growth and differentiation.
- Lead the R&D team in designing, prototyping, and testing new Sodium battery products, from single cell to larger prototype products and beyond
- Manage the R&D budget, ensuring effective resource allocation and cost control.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive innovation, enhance product offerings, and optimize product performance.
- Evaluate and implement appropriate methodologies, tools, and processes to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of R&D activities.
- Define, communicate, implement and audit a clear roadmap for the development of products and technology.
- Refine and develop the technical strategy in alignment with commercial objectives of the business.
- Collaborate with the company Directors (finance, manufacturing and business development) and input market / business requirements into the technical program.
- Ensure timely delivery of high-quality products, meeting or exceeding customer expectations.
- Conduct regular product reviews to assess performance, identify areas for improvement, and drive continuous innovation.
- Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with external organizations, universities, research institutions, and industry experts.
- Foster collaboration with key stakeholders and use your personal network to leverage external expertise and resources
- Represent the company at industry conferences, events, and forums to enhance visibility and build relationships.
- Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing technical team.
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to team members, fostering their professional growth.
- Champion a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages knowledge sharing and cross-functional collaboration
- Bachelor's degree in physical sciences, engineering, or a related technical field. A master's or doctoral degree is preferred.
- Proven experience (8+ years) in a senior technical leadership role, preferably in the clean energy or related industry. Ideally, some background in electrochemical product development
- Strong expertise in clean energy technologies, including energy storage, renewable energy systems, grid integration, etc.
- Demonstrated success in developing and implementing innovative products or technologies.
- Strong expertise in the application of methodologies used in high volume manufacture to drive up quality. Ideally a qualified Six Sigma practitioner.
- Experience in managing complex R&D projects, including budgeting, resource allocation, and project planning.
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams.
- Strategic mindset with the ability to translate business goals into technical strategies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and presentation abilities
