Leadership Team Dynamics Review

Objective: For each of the management team to fully understand their own personal leadership and communication style better and what role they play in the management team dynamic.

This knowledge will enable the smooth transition of a new member into the team, as the existing members will better understand their individual contribution and the interplay of the team. This understanding can be facilitated through 2 different psychometric lenses: Insights Discovery or Belbin Team Roles. Having a picture of the current team and how they may operate together, will benefit the recruitment process as any theoretical gaps can be factored in as part of the recruitment process. These tools are stand alone or can be used concurrently for a fuller picture.

Insights Discovery psychometric tool

Insights Discovery provides insight into the behavioural preferences of different members of the team through the completion of an online assessment that takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Individuals receive their own 21-page report including a management section (which further allows facilitated team development) and a 1 hour coaching session on what the report means to them. Furthermore, a team wheel diagram can be produced, revealing areas of overlap or scarcity, which can feed into the recruitment process in a number of ways.

It is recommended that anyone who receives a report participates in a 1 hour Zoom team meeting during which the facilitator explains the theory underpinning the psychometric and what the colours and graphs in the report mean. They will then receive their report and read through the contents individually, and this will be followed up with a one-hour individual coaching session during which they can ask any questions and consider what this means for them. This will be followed up by a 1 hour Zoom meeting looking at the team make up through the Insights lens.

Belbin Team Roles

Individuals receive their own report based upon completion of a 20 minute online self- perception questionnaire and a shorter online questionnaire completed by a minimum of 4 colleagues. Belbin team roles is based upon research that most successful teams have a diverse mix of team behaviours/ team roles. This psychometric identifies which of the team roles is an individual’s primary strength and what is their secondary strength. It is enriched by the fact that colleague’s perspectives are included in the results and doesn’t rely on self- perception. In any team task, different roles will be needed at different times and utilising Belbin can enable a team to see who will be strongest at what point. The team report assesses how a group of individuals will work together as a team, detailing who will take on which role within the team, and where there may be gaps or overlaps in behavioural contributions.
